Ursula von der Leyen

Ursula von der Leyen has been president of the European Commission since 1 December 2019. She served as Germany’s minister of defence, minister of labour and social affairs, and minister of family affairs, senior citizens and women, and was first elected to the Bundestag in 2005. She was previously minister of minister for social affairs, women, family affairs and health in Lower Saxony. A licensed physician with a master’s degree in public health, before entering politics she was a member of the academic staff at the Hanover Medical School.
